If you’re new to RV camping with an electric vehicle, you might be wondering how to plan for your trip. Here are some tips for hitting the road without racking up emissions on the go:

One of the best ways to support zero-emission camping is by towing your RV camper with an electric vehicle, like a Tesla SUV. This way, you’re driving a car that releases no carbon emissions and allows for you to travel without any of the guilt of harming the environment with toxic fossil fuels. In addition to this, it’s easy to find RV camping sites that have changing ports that will suit both your electric vehicle, as well as your luxury RV. Plus, some luxury RV’s are equipped with charging ports that are able to provide an emergency micro charge to an electric vehicle, so you don’t have to worry about running out of power between charging ports. With a fully charged battery, you don’t have to worry about trying to find a charging station in an unfamiliar area, and you can get to where you’re going with fewer stops along the way. 
  • Consider Your Speed: In order to maintain a stable tow, it’s good to keep your speed limit in check when towing an RV camper with an electric vehicle (or any vehicle for that matter!). As a rule of thumb, you’ll want to try to keep your speed limit to a max of 65 mph. Some electric vehicle drivers who tow RV campers advise to go about five miles below the speed limit on 65 highways to maximize charge. Your electric vehicle will be putting in extra effort to tow the RV, so it’s important not to go too fast and risk pushing it too hard. 
  • Weigh Your Options, Literally: One of the biggest factors that can affect range (how far your electric vehicle can travel before a charge) is weight. When your electric vehicle is towing an RV camper, obviously, it’s going to be more weighed down than usual. However, there are ways to lessen this load, like investing in a lightweight luxury RV. 
  • Think About Terrain: Another factor that can affect the charge of your electric vehicle when towing an RV camper is the terrain you’re traversing. If you’re heading onto a winding mountain road with a steep elevation, you’re going to be using more energy than you would on a flat road. As such, this can lead to decreased charge levels. Be sure to factor in the type of terrain you’re traveling so you can optimize your speed, as well as your charge levels while towing your RV camper. 
  • Watch Out for Weather: In addition to terrain, weather can play a big role in how far an electric vehicle can go when towing an RV camper. Cold temperatures typically have a negative impact on range. Headwinds can also slow you down, so you might not be making as much distance as you normally would in your electric vehicle. If conditions get so rough that they compromise your visibility, it’s always best to pull over and wait until the inclement weather passes.
