Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has reportedly made signing Eden Hazard a top priority this upcoming summer with contact already made with his representatives. The Belgium international has suffered a torrid time at the Bernabeu since his dream move to the Spanish capital back in 2019.
Fitness issues have played their part, but he’s also fallen out of favour under both Zinedine Zidane and Carlo Ancelotti. He’s started just seven La Liga matches this campaign and hasn’t featured in their last three league games.
Hazard has also been overlooked on the biggest stage in the Champions League, watching on from the bench as Real produced a remarkable turnaround against Paris Saint-Germain last week. The former Chelsea superstar still has two years left on his contract at Real, but it appears as though his time at the club could be coming to an end.
Hazard isn’t short of admirers though with a return to the Premier League increasingly likely. And Arsenal could bring Hazard back to London, according to Footmercato.
The report states that Arsenal have already “initiated the first contacts”, although there has been no progress in talks so far. Newcastle are also mentioned as a possibility, while Chelsea had maintained an interest before sanctions were placed on the club.
Hazard seemingly still wants to fight for his place at Real, with his brother, Kylian, admitting: “Eden is fine where he is and his family feels good there. He has a contract until 2024 and I think he will stay until then
“Maybe Eden is playing a little less now and the team is functioning without him. But everyone knows how good he is. He has to show he is a good substitute.”
Hazard previously said earlier in the season: “I signed with Real Madrid for five seasons. The first two have not been good, the injuries have not helped me, but I still have three more to prove my worth.
“I hope it works, I hope to get up one morning and feel great on the training ground. If I feel pain there, I drag it to the games and I will continue to have it. I am waiting for that moment when I can show my worth again.
“Real Madrid have already spent a lot of money on me. I want to give something back to them.” Carlo Ancelotti said in January: “Hazard is in our plans for the next season, I can confirm.”
