Asda to make huge change to deliveries this week – all you need to know

Asda is making a huge change to how customers will receive their online orders, and it will come into force on 30 April. The supermarket has said that it is making the move as “things are getting back to normal”.

When preparing customers’ orders, Asda will not be packing most food items in plastic bags.

However, it will continue to pack fresh produce, meat, and poultry in plastic to ensure shoppers’ safety and to maintain the quality of the produce.

Asda is asking customers to ensure that they have their own bags or boxes ready at their doorsteps or in their car boots, so that when they receive or collect their orders, they will be able to pack their groceries themselves.

However, if customers are self-isolating or will struggle packing their own bags, Asda has said that staff and delivery drivers will be happy to help.

Instead, poultry items will be sold in more environmentally friendly pouches.

Asda shoppers will notice the change in all stores in the coming weeks, with all chicken to be in reduced packaging by the middle of summer.

This will include whole birds, drumsticks, chicken legs, diced breast, and mini fillets.

As well reducing plastic pollution, it could increase hygiene as customers will no longer need to pick up chicken from the trays.

This means that when cooking chicken, shoppers will be able to slide the meat from its pouch directly into the pan.

Asda Poultry Buying Manager Lisa Barratt said: “The change in poultry packaging marks the next step in our commitment to use less and recycle more, something which we are very passionate about delivering for our customers and colleagues.

“The move means customers don’t have to prioritise plastic reduction over grocery decision making, ensuring the nation can continue purchasing quality poultry at the same price.”
