Asda has began selling second hand clothing at some of its stores in England and Scotland. The move is part of the supermarket’s bid to cut down on textile waste.
It seems that the supermarket’s decision was led by a rise in interest in online vintage sellers, such as Depop and eBay – especially during the pandemic as non-essential retailers were closed.
Steve Lynam, Managing Director of Preloved Vintage Kilo, which started out selling second hand clothes priced by weight at events around the UK, said its partnership with Asda would “help bring sustainable fashion to the mainstream”.
He said: “Our Partnership with George at Asda is one that we are extremely proud of.
“In a world where we are becoming more environmentally conscious this partnership will help bring Sustainable Fashion to the mainstream which is something as a business we strive for in everything we do.
All customers need to do is bring garments they no longer wear or want to their local Asda store.
Asda has signed up to the Textiles 2030 action plan, aiming to reduce the climate impact of fashion.
Both Marks and Spencer and Tesco are also part of the plan, and the supermarkets are committed to enabling clothing reuse, recycling fibres, minimising waste, and improving the durability and recyclability of garments.
It is clear that Asda is serious about climate change and caring for the environment as the supermarket has also recently reintroduced a plastic bag ban on its online deliveries.
From 30 April, customers will receive groceries not packed in bags – having to instead use their own bags or boxes when their shopping is delivered to their doors.
