The branches in Daventry and Towcester, Northamptonshire, will shut in early 2022 – a decision that will affect hundreds of customers, in particular the older generation.
Meanwhile, a few weeks ago an angry MP slammed Barclays bank and accused them of misleading their customers over another high street branch closure.
Siobhain McDonagh, Labour MP for Mithcam and Morden in greater London told BBC Politics London that she was furious that the elderly and most vulnerable in society were being discriminated against.
She also accused the bank of not being honest with its customers on the reasons for its closure.
Ms McDonagh said: “Some of the customers they are discriminating against have been with them for 30 years.”
Banks say that they are just keeping up with the times and responding to consumer demand.
However, research by Age UK found that one in five older people still prefer to use cash for everyday spending.
A Barclays spokesperson said: “The decision to close a branch is never an easy one, but we’re aware that most of our branch customers now use other ways to do their banking such as our digital, telephone and video banking services.
“In Daventry, the number of counter transactions has gone down in the two years to March 2020, and additionally 88 percent of the branch customers also use other ways to do their banking. In the past 12 months, only 123 customers use he Daventry branch exclusively for their banking.
“In Towcester, 88 percent of customers use alternative banking methods, and only 84 customers use this branch exclusively for their banking.
“We’ll continue to offer a variety of alternate physical banking options, including our Barclays Vans which can support remote communities, our MoneyStore, hubs, pods, and pop-up colleagues in residence in local facilities such as libraries, town halls and community centres.”
