UPDATE: Battlefield 2042 fans have found out when the eagerly anticipated beta will be.

A Battlefield 2042 technical playtest had been scheduled for this month, but has been delayed so EA has more time to work on the cross-play function.

EA said the Battlefield 2042 test will launch later this summer, and now this launch window has been narrowed down.

The Battlefield 2042 open beta will be taking place this September, but an exact date hasn’t been announced just yet.

The Battlefield 2042 open beta release news was revealed on Thursday, the same day that EA Play Live 2021 was held.

During this event EA unveiled the third mode for Battlefield 2042 – which is called Battlefield Portal.

This new mode will let gamers play on a variety of classic matches – like Arica Harbor and the Caspian Border – and players will be able to take control of characters and wield weapons from Battlefield history’s (and history itself).

So Battlefield 2042 characters will be able to face off against characters from Battlefield 1942 for instance.

ORIGINAL: Battlefield 2042 beta release date could get announced during EA Play Live 2021 today (Thursday July 23).

The Battlefield 2042 test was due to take place this month, however EA recently revealed that this early chance to play Battlefield 2042 had been delayed to “later this summer”.

EA said the Battlefield 2042 technical playtest had been pushed back as they build a cross-play function for the shooter, which is a feature that fans have been demanding.

Explaining the decision previously, EA said: “One of your most frequently asked questions is about cross-play. We can confirm it’s a function we’re looking to build and test for Battlefield 2042.

“To accommodate that, we’ve made the decision to move the Technical Playtest to later this summer so we’ll have the opportunity to test the cross-play functionality.

“This means a few thousand participants will join us to help us test some of our new features and functionality that we’re building from the ground up for Battlefield 2042. Do keep in mind that the Technical Playtest is purposefully not intended to be the full experience you will see in the Open Beta, or at launch. It is a development-led environment with only a subset of features, focused on technical performance.”

While weapons and vehicles from across the Battlefield franchise history (and history in general) will all allegedly be playable in the same warzone.

This leak comes courtesy of Tom Henderson, who has an enviable track record of accuracy when it comes to Battlefield and COD leaks.

We’ll have to wait and see whether this ends up being the case, but Battlefield fans don’t have too long to wait to find out for certain.

The EA Play Live 2021 event kicks off later today (Thursday July 22) at 6pm BST.
