It is just one of more than 85 wildfires burning across the American West, levelling houses and destroying 1.4 million acres of land. Thousands of residents have already been forced to evacuate the region.

Experts say the mega-fires are being fuelled by extreme heatwaves and severe drought, turning land into kindling ‑ all amplified by the climate crisis.

Meanwhile, nearly 400 people were evacuated yesterday after wildfires ravaged Italy’s island of Sardinia. No deaths or injuries were reported, but several homes were damaged.
