Cleaning: Get rid of mould in your washing machine with white vinegar and baking soda

3 mins read

Patches of mould can grow in multiple places around your machine, including on the rubber seal and the detergent tray. To get rid of them and keep your machine clean, all you need are a few cheap household products.

It’s important to keep your washing machine clean as the mould and residue that can collect in it can impact the cleanliness of your clothes.

Luckily, laundry expert and CEO of British laundry service Laundryheap, Deyan Dimitrov, has shared his top tips on keeping your washing machine as good as new.

Deyan’s most important tip is to use white vinegar and baking soda to get rid of the mould.

These two ingredients are handy products to keep around the house as they can be used for a variety of cleaning tasks.

To try and prevent the growth of mould, Deyan advised running a hot wash once in a while.

Most people wash clothes at 30 degrees to save energy, but this provides optimum breeding ground for mould and mildew to grow.

However, this doesn’t mean you should start changing your environmentally conscious habits.

All you need to do is set your machine to a wash of 60 degrees or higher and put white vinegar in the fabric softener tray.

The heat and humidity present in the washing machine after a wash contributes to the growth of mould and mildew.

Leaving your washing machine door and detergent tray open after a wash lets cold air in and gets rid of any trapped moisture.

It also helps if you dry around the inside of the tray and washing machine drum with a dry towel to get rid of any excess moisture after each wash.

Deyan highlighted that washing machine trays are removable, so yours can be cleaned in hot soapy water every now and then to prevent mould from building up inside.
