Debenhams confirms exact date when 27 stores will close

Among the branches the retailer will shut in the first wave – on May 2 – are large stores in Newbury, Berkshire, and Wrexham, north Wales. More will close two days later and the remainder throughout the following fortnight, after a last-minute sale to entice customers this month.

The news has saddened shoppers across the country. Many fear their local high streets will become “ghost towns,” North Wales Live says.

“Such a shame,” wrote one woman online.

Another posted: “Sad to see. I just hope someone can reuse the building or Eagles Meadow (Wrexham) will become a ghost town.”

One comment reads: “Soul destroying for staff, how do you think they feel?”

Boohoo bought the brand in January after it went into administration for a second time in April last year.

The retailer stressed shoppers will find discounts of up to 80% off fashion and home and up to 70% off beauty and fragrance products in the final sale.

A spokesperson for the company said: “With such great bargains on offer, it’s no wonder our stock is selling out incredibly fast.

“Time is running out for shoppers to take advantage of the incredible discounts being offered at these stores.”
