HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has issued the scam warning today, urging people to protect themselves and their money. It could affect a whole host of self-employed workers, meaning Britons should be vigilant.
“This is a scam – delete the message.”
The alert also linked to a guide on the Government website, which shares insight on how to spot scams.
HMRC suggests people use their checklist to decide if a suspicious contact could be a scam, rather than a genuine phone call, text message (SMS) or email.
On the list, HMRC warns something could be a scam if it is “unexpected”.

Forms of communication which offer a refund, tax rebate or grant could also suggest a scam.
Another warning sign is if the person is asking for personal information, such as bank details.
If they are threatening, or telling the person to transfer money, it could be a scam, HMRC warns.
They aren’t the only signs to look out for though.
WhatsApp messages
Should a person receive any communication through WhatsApp which claims to be from HMRC, they can be confident it is a scam.
HMRC directs those in this position to take a screenshot and forward it as an email to [email protected]
Gift or payment vouchers
HMRC confirms they will never ask a person to pay with gift or payment vouchers.
