At the White House, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said the new strain of the Covid virus is “in search of the next vulnerable person to infect”. “The delta variant is more aggressive and much more transmissible than previously circulating strains,” she said.

“It is one of the most infectious respiratory viruses we know of, and that I have seen in my 20-year career.

“We are at yet another pivotal moment in this pandemic, with cases rising again and some hospitals reaching their capacity in some areas, we need to come together as one nation.”

On Thursday, CDC and the US government debated if vaccinated people should be required to wear masks indoors to slow the spread.

However, the government did not change face mask rules.

“Just four states accounted for more than 40 percent of all cases in the past week, with 1 in 5 of all cases occurring in Florida alone,” Zients said during a briefing last Friday.

Florida especially is seeing a record number of new cases.

On Wednesday, the state reported 12,647 new cases – the highest number since January.

The same day, 55,132 cases were registered nationwide, meaning Florida’s daily infections made up about 23 percent.

Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis urged people in the state to get the jab.

“These vaccines are saving lives,” Mr DeSantis said.

“They are reducing mortality.”
