Deontay Wilder brutally knocks out Robert Helenius in the first round

Deontay Wilder returned to the ring with another blistering knockout. With ten seconds left in the first round, The Bronze Bomber detonated a vicious right hand that sent Robert Helenius down and out.

A cagey opener exploded into life as Wilder caught The Nordic Nightmare as he backed up against the ropes. The American generated a huge amount of power from an extremely short backhand with very little wind-up — a reminder of the danger that Wilder poses.

After 12 months out of the ring and consecutive knockout losses to Tyson Fury, fans were unsure what to expect from the former WBC champion as he made his return to the squared circle. Inspired by a bronze statue of himself erected in his native Tuscaloosa, Wilder vowed to return for the people’s entertainment and entertain them he did.

Back at his natural weight of 215lb, Wilder looked light and agile as he forced Helenius to continually overextend with his blistering footwork.

Talking about his trainer Malik Scott, he continued: ” He’s being a big inspiration for me, a big motivation for me, this is my brother, these are my brothers and I love them so much and it”s been a good camp, all my people around me, we wanted to make this fun again. You can do this for so long until it just becomes a job, it something that you’re doing, we just had to make it fun again, we put over 720, 730 something rounds and paid off tonight.

“I just appreciate all you people coming out for the love and support. I hope all you guys get home safely, we gotta spread more love out here, there’s nothing wrong with showing love to each other, hug each other, tell someone that you love them and mean it.

“Look at them in the eyes and mean it. There’s so much hate in this world and we need to change that, as the people we can change that.”
