Emma Raducanu match stopped in bizarre circumstances as seagull flies into arena

Emma Raducanu and Danka Kovinic had to take a brief stoppage in their close encounter inside Margaret Court Arena due to a seagull flying into the stadium. The British No 1 is making her Australian Open debut this week and got off to a flyer against former US Open champion Sloane Stephens in the opening round.

Despite dropping the second set, Raducanu comfortably dispatched of the American to progress to the second round.

And it looked to be another comfortable evening against Kovinic on Thursday after Raducanu won the opening three games.

But blistering on Raducanu’s hand was clearly taking its toll on Raducanu, who had to take a medical time out to get it seen to.

After having her hand re-wrapped, Raducanu returned to the court but Kovinic soon went on to win five consecutive games before holding out to win the opening set.

The continual breaks of serve carried over into the second set, but Raducanu looked far more in control.

Despite losing her serve at 4-4, Raducanu bounced back immediately before forcing a deciding set.

At 2-1, Raducanu had three opportunities to break her opponent’s serve but failed to take full advantage.

And she was punished in the following game as Kovinic delivered the first blow to take a small lead.
