Ferran Torres 'transfer request' could affect Barcelona and Arsenal transfer plans

Manchester City striker Ferran Torres has reportedly requested a transfer to Barcelona which might affect the January plans of the Spanish giants and Arsenal. Torres enjoyed an excellent start to the season but suffered a devastating injury that will likely keep him out for the next few months.

The 21-year-old started the season in fine form. He scored seven goals in eight games for club and country, and in the process became a prominent member of the Spain squad.

However, Torres suffered a foot injury while playing for his country in October and is expected to be sidelined for a couple of months.

A couple of Pep Guardiola’s stars have performed well in his absence. Phil Foden and Kevin de Bruyne have both been used as false No 9s.

The 19-year-old academy star Cole Palmer played in the role during last week’s 3-0 victory against Everton.

Torres might then find it hard to get back into the team and has supposedly requested a move, with Barca understood to be interested in a transfer.

According to Spanish outlet MundoDeportivo, the former Valencia player has asked Guardiola to put plans in place to help him move to the Catalan club. The 50-year-old has apparently granted the wish on the condition that the Premier League champions are sufficiently remunerated.

And that could affect the transfer plans of both Barca and Arsenal, who have been linked with a couple of other City stars, who would likely remain if Torres departs in January.

Barca were linked with midfielder Bernardo Silva during the summer transfer window. The LaLiga giants, who are suffering the effects of huge debts and the departures of key stars, apparently wanted to sign Silva after his future was put in doubt.

Goal reported in the summer that questions were asked over the Portugal international’s future due to the arrival of Jack Grealish and the emergence of Foden. However, Silva has surprisingly made 17 appearances this season and has performed well under Guardiola.

Meanwhile, Arsenal were interested in signing Sterling for similar reasons, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano. The England international enjoyed a stunning Euro 2020 and even hinted that his future was in doubt during the tournament.

“He came as a winger, but he has to think about (being) a striker. When Sergio [Aguero], Gabriel [Jesus] were out, he was there. He scored against Leeds and Crystal Palace. He didn’t have many minutes, but when he played, he had a sense of goal.

“Yeah, he can be [a No 9]. We will use him, we used him and he was brilliant. His rhythm, especially defensively he has improved a lot. The game at Palace, he makes a turn [in his season] – so good. The movement he makes as a striker, for the [third] goal, it hits the bar and where it goes, he knew it.

“The smell, the strikers know, intuitively where it will arrive. He has this talent and the first goal is fantastic. Very pleased.

“Maybe I have to think about how he can play as a striker because every time he plays in that position, he always has a real sense of goal.

“He is an incredible signing for us as a young player, he can play in three positions up front, but playing more central, he has an incredible sense of goal.”
