The attack took place in La Chapelle-sur-Erdre, a town near the north of Nantes. The gunman is on the run and a police hunt is currently underway.
The GIGN (National Gendarmerie Intervention Group) is dispatched to the site. Criminal identification is on site.
The whole area is surrounded by police.
The policewoman was seriously injured in the thigh.
She was rushed to the Nantes University Hospital.
The cause of the attack is not yet known.
