Fresh review: A dark side of romance in a shockingly gruesome satire

Fresh (certificate 15) starts in rom-com territory as her hopeless romantic Noa endures a comically disastrous dinner recognisable to anyone familiar with swiping smartphone dating apps. Then, after giving up on love, she experiences a classic Hollywood meet-cute, encountering Steve in the fresh produce aisle at her local supermarket.

Plastic surgeon Steve (Sebastian Stan) seems too good to be true.

He’s rich, handsome, funny and has never used a dating app in his life. But his lack of online presence rings alarm bells for Noa’s best pal Mollie (Jojo T Gibbs).

Those fears are realised in a twist that appears as the opening titles crash in on the 33-minute mark.

Steve has very unusual appetites and this anti-rom-com serves its thrills raw and decidedly bloody.

On Disney+ now.
