Gary Lineker has issued an apology for the BBC’s coverage of Christian Eriksen’s collapse during Denmark’s Euro 2020 opener against Finland on Saturday. The 29-year-old fell to the floor in the closing stages of the first half, with TV cameras showing multiple images of medics attempting to resuscitate the midfielder on the turf.
Eriksen has since been stablilised and transferred to hospital, with UEFA and the Danish Football Union confirming the news via Twitter.
The match was quickly suspended but was given the green light to resume at 7.30pm upon the request of both teams.
Lineker, who is leading BBC One’s coverage of the match, has apologised to viewers after the distressing images of Eriksen receiving emergency medical treatment were shown on multiple occasions.
“We will be back on air at 7.25 on @bbcone,” tweeted Lineker.
“I understand some of you would have been upset with some of the images shown (we were too). Obviously these were the host pictures and out of our control.
“They should have stayed on a wide of the stadium. Apologies.”
