Flights at the airport are heavily disrupted as the planes cannot land, while take-off is also very difficult.
The building that is burning was under construction, and it would be a reception centre for asylum seekers, a spokesperson of the airport told Swiss radio RTS.
Traffic in the area is also closed.
Ignace Jeannerat, an airport spokesperson, told RTS: “There is a building – the new reception center for asylum seekers – which was under construction… it is on fire.
“It is outside the perimeter of the airport”.
Jeannerat added that the smoke is very thick and has forced the airport to suspend all landings.
The executive noted: “The take-offs are left to the discretion of the pilots”.
Disruptions are expected to continue for at least another two hours.
