Graeme Souness' bizarre 'car showroom' comment paints bleak picture for Scotland v England

England and Scotland will face off in a crucial Group D clash on Friday at Wembley.

And while England know that a victory under the arch will book their place in the last 16, Scotland will be looking to claim their first points of the tournament.

Steve Clarke’s men lost 2-0 to the Czech Republic in their first group game, while England defeated World Cup finalists Croatia 1-0 in their opening clash.

But now all the attention has turned to the oldest rivalry in international football, with Scotland legend Souness explaining that his contemporaries face an uphill task to avoid defeat to Gareth Southgate’s men.

Speaking on ITV Sport following Belgium’s 2-1 win over Denmark, Souness said, “I would be looking forward to it if we had beat the Czech Republic.

“We would have come to Wembley with a bit of confidence and less pressure on ourselves, but I feel it is going to be a difficult night for Scotland.

Kevin De Bruyne hailed as ‘unbelievable’ as Belgium reach last 16

“That garage has 10 cars and you can’t quite decide if one of those 10 cars is really for you.

“Then you go down to the English garage and there’s a thousand cars.

“You’re going to get a better choice, a better car. You should beat us.”

Meanwhile, Souness’ ITV colleague and former England left-back Ashley Cole said it is vital that England’s players keep their cool in the white-hot derby environment.

“There’s always high expectations when you put on an England shirt,” he said.

“Tomorrow is like a Derby, the Scottish and English fans will be going wild but it will be important for the players to control their emotions throughout the game.

“The emotion of the game and the atmosphere in the stadium will affect players’ decision making.

“So it is important that no silly challenges come in early on that may change the result of the game.”
