Mr Sunak, ahead of his spring statement “mini-budget” on Wednesday, is reportedly looking for a way to recoup fuel duty.

While rumours suggest he wants to help Britons with the cost of living crisis with a 5p per litre reduction at the pump, the Treasury is also searching for funds elsewhere.

One potential solution is a toll to replace a drop in road tax collection caused by a surge in electric vehicle ownership.

Few toll roads exist in the UK, with approximately 13 split across motorways and A-roads.

Speaking to the Times, a source revealed Downing Street is “very seriously” looking at the method to “solve” issues caused by fuel duty.

Any attempts to introduce a new selection of toll roads won’t prove popular, as drivers already face record-high fuel prices.
