Hotel Chocolat issues food recall due to undeclared nuts in chocolates

Food recalls are issued when a product is unsafe to eat due to an error or malfunction. Brands or stores usually ask customers who have already bought the product to return it to the shop for a full refund.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) announces food recalls on its website whenever an item is being withdrawn from a supermarket or food store’s shelves.

In a statement regarding Hotel Chocolat’s food recall, the FSA said: “This product contains hazelnuts and macadamia nuts making it a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to nuts.”

Its advice to customers who have bought the Ugly But Good chocolates is to “not eat it”.

It said: “If you have bought the above product and have an allergy to nuts, do not eat it.

“Instead return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund,” the FSA added.

Hotel Chocolat has also outlined what customers should do if they have bought the product.

The chocolate brand said: “If you purchased this item online, we will automatically issue you with a full refund and ask that you allow up to 7 days for this to appear on your bank statement.

“If you purchased this item in any of our locations, please return any remaining product/packaging or proof of purchase to your nearest Hotel Chocolat and we will issue you with a refund.

“We appreciate that the current covid-19 restrictions may make this difficult, and can confirm that you have up to 3 months from today [April 14] to return this item for a refund.”

Other actions taken by the company include contacting the relevant allergy support organisations, which will tell their members about the recall.

Hotel Chocolat has also issued a point-of-sale notice to its customers to explain why the product is being recalled and what shoppers should do if they have bought it.
