How to clean your entire kitchen – using just baking soda

5 mins read

Baking soda can be used for so much more than just as a leavening agent in your favourite baked goods. While bicarbonate of soda is undoubtedly essential within the culinary world, many are very surprised to learn of its multi-functionality. Baking soda serves as an ideal multi-purpose cleaner; one that’s affordable, eco-friendly and non-toxic. These amazing properties make it a go-to for most cleaning professionals, and as a bonus, baking soda won’t leave strong odours around the house like many other cleaning brands saturated with chemicals. Here’s how to clean your kitchen with baking soda.

Unclog the drains

Clogged drains can be a pain as they often cause horrible odours and mounds of dirty water in the sink.

Don’t worry, though, as baking soda can render your drains good as new and flowing freely in no time at all.

Just add two tablespoons of baking soda down the drain and pour hot vinegar (heated in the microwave or stove) on top of the powder.

This will cause a sizzling, foamy reaction and should break up the blockage in the drain.

Afterwards, run hot water down the drain to rinse everything out and ensure it’s working as it should be, and if not, simply repeat this process.

Clean the oven

Cleaning the oven can feel like a mountainous task, but using baking soda, it doesn’t have to be.

To start, make a paste by mixing baking soda and water before spreading onto the bottom and all sides of the oven.

Spray vinegar over the paste until it starts foaming, let sit for a few minutes and then scrub off with a sponge or dishcloth.

If the stains and baked on grime are particularly stubborn, spray more vinegar until it’s easy to remove the gunk or simply repeat the process.

Clean the microwave and dishwasher

The microwave gets messy fast thanks to the exploding foods inside, but baking soda will fix that in no time at all.

Sprinkle baking soda onto a sponge and wipe down all areas in the microwave, then pass over a clean sponge to get rid of any baking powder residue.

For the dishwasher, baking soda is an absolute star ingredient and will also get rid of any smells lingering.

Sprinkle a small amount of baking soda on the bottom of the dishwasher before running on a normal cycle.

Remove grease and grime from pots and pans

Getting rid of grease and tough stains can be an arduous task, but once again, baking soda comes to the rescue.

Simply sprinkle baking soda directly onto your greasiest pots and pans before adding vinegar on top.

Let the whole thing sit for about 30 minutes so as to let it infiltrate the surface and loosen the food particles.

After half an hour has passed, use a sponge to clean up the pots and pans, at which point stains should lift very easily and quickly.

Repeat this process as many times as needed.
