How to get rid of limescale on taps – handy tips and tricks for cleaning taps naturally

3 mins read

Limescale build-up is a common nuisance in homes and can be found wherever water is regularly used, including taps, showerheads, kettles and toilets. It is one of the most frustrating cleaning challenges in the home and can build up quickly before you even have a chance to notice.

Limescale is caused by diluted minerals, such as magnesium and calcium carbonate, which crystallise and form limescale on surfaces.

It’s easy to spot – white, hard build up on the ends of taps and other surfaces.

While many mixtures, natural and unnatural, can tackle problem limescale when it comes to taps the issue is more complicated.

Keeping the tap in contact with the cleaning solution can prove difficult, and leaving it to soak is key for getting rid of build-up.

However, the easiest solution is to use a sandwich bag, or similar, and a hairband or rubber band.

Once you’ve made your mixture, pour it into the bag and secure it onto the end of the tap.

You can simply throw it away at the end, or wash and reuse the bag.

If you’re looking for a natural way to remove limescale, you can’t go wrong with the classic home cleaning hacks – using lemon, vinegar and baking soda.

Baking soda and vinegar

Mix the two together in a bowl, using one tablespoon of baking soda for one cup of vinegar.

When mixed, pour into a plastic bag, and like the lemon, secure around the tap, making sure the tap head is fully covered by the mixture.

Leave for two to three hours, then throw away.

You should be able to wipe/scrub away any remaining limescale with ease.
