Brown stains at the bottom of your toilet bowl look incredibly unsightly. These marks are caused by hard water, which has a high concentration of minerals and causes these horrible looking marks. If you’re looking forward to having some friends round, or are trying to sell your home, you’ll be delighted to hear there are dozens of ways to remove these stains.
Citric acid
The exerts at Dri-Pak say citric acid is an excellent solution to the dirty looking marks.
All you need to do is:
- Pour a kettle of hot water down into the bowl, and add half a packet of citric acid. The hot water will help to spark a reaction between the limescale and the powder.
- Leave the solution in the bowl over night, or at least for several hours.
- The following morning, give your toilet a good scrub with your toilet brush and flush.

Pumice stone
Using a pumice stone is an extremely effective way to remove any remaining brown stains from your toilet.
They’re easy to get hold of and are relatively inexpensive but can provide immediate relief for your toilet embarrassment.
Simply submerge the stone in water to allow it to soften, and avoid scratching your toilet.
Then rub the stone over the line in the same way you’d use an erase to rub out pencil marks on paper.
