Huawei will unleash its all-new Android rival during P50 smartphone launch event tomorrow

Chinese behemoth Huawei will hold its next blockbuster launch event tomorrow, July 29, where the firm is tipped to unveil its alternative to Android 12 as well as an all-new flagship smartphone. In the final hours ahead of the bumper event, some details have leaked.

The latest Huawei launch comes a little over a year after its previous Huawei P40 phone announcement – and almost two years since it was walloped with a trade ban by the US, which barred it from dealing with all American companies. This meant that, although its phones still use a version of Android, it hasn’t been able to include popular apps and services like Gmail, Google Maps, or the Google Play Store.

In response, its US and European sales plummeted. Back in 2020, it was a true competitor of Apple, Samsung and Xiaomi, featuring in the top five smartphone brands. However, in the first three months of this year, Huawei has suffered a dramatic fall from grace and was overtaken by newcomers Oppo and Vivo.

Huawei hasn’t taken the ban lying down, though.

It has spent two years developing its very own operating system to avoid relying on Google’s Android. The rival HarmonyOS has already been announced for the company’s two most recent tablets in the MatePad line. But one of the most-anticipated announcements tomorrow will be exactly what it will look like on mobile.

As you might expect, the Huawei website is light on detail, but boasts that “HarmonyOS will unlock new capabilities in cross-device communication and enjoy innovative features for all-round superior performance, with powerful security management.”

Other details of the new phone are few and far between.

The Verge reckons cameras will once again be a major selling point. Huawei’s phones were one of the first to have zoom lenses and night mode. Stoking the rumours, Huawei exec Richard Yu teased on his Weibo page the phone would mark “a new era of mobile imaging”. Leaked photos appear to show a huge array of rear cameras.

Journalist Ishan Agarwal, who has a solid track record when it comes to unannounced smartphones, shared on Twitter today that he had received full details of the Huawei P50’s specs.

He revealed the new flagship handset will have a 13MP front camera, and a total of 167MP split between four rear cameras. It will come in 256GB and 512GB models, with 4,360mAH, 66W Wired, 50W Wireless Charging and stereo speakers. However, Agarwal claims the phone will not use 5G connectivity, in what would be a surprise move for a Chinese firm.

If his facts are correct, the Huawei P50 could also use a Time of Flight camera. This advanced technology is used to help cameras tell the distance between objects – making it ideally equipped for Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality apps and games.

Although these specs sound promising – and Agarwal has been on the money before – we won’t know for sure until the product launch event tomorrow. Express.co.uk will be tuning in, so check back tomorrow for the true specs and inside story.
