Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce, who won the gold medals in the female 100m events at both the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games, had to settle for the silver medal after Elaine Thompson stormed to victory in Tokyo and set a new Olympic record in the process. Ms Fraser Pryce admitted in her interview after the race that she would most likely go home and cry following the loss.

Ms Fraser-Pryce said: “It is crazy but my emotions are still very raw right now.

“I am very sure I am going to go home and probably have some tears.

“As I said I have been through this many, many times.

“I am just really excited about what I was able to do tonight.”

She added regarding her future: “I do not know yet, we will see.”

Despite Fraser-Pryce’s disappointment at coming second in the race, viewers took to Twitter to pay tribute to the Jamaican female sprinters that all secured a top 3 finish.

One Twitter user said: “OH MY HEAVENS! 10.61! Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson Herah just broke FloJo’s Olympic record in the women’s 100 meters!

“JAMAICAN SWEEP! Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce silver! 10.74! Shericka Jackson bronze! 10.76!”

Another tweeted: “With the silver medal, Fraser-Pryce breaks the tie with Bolt/Gatlin/Ottey for medals won in an #Olympic 100m final.

“Shelly stands alone with 4.

“And she’s won medals in 3 different decades.

“Hard to see that ever eclipsed…#GOAT”

A third wrote: “Legendary Shelly Anne Fraser-Pryce only got silver.”

A fourth said: “I so wanted Shelley Ann Fraser-Pryce to win…..but it was not to be…..”

Another tweeted: Protect Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce at all costs Jamaica.

“I don’t want to see a sad tweet… We made history today.”
