Army of the Dead follows Dave Bautista and a band of mercenaries head into a quarantine zone during a zombie apocalypse for a grand heist. The director, Zack Snyder, made a film back in 2004 with a similar name, and now fans are desperate to know if these two films are connected.
Is Army of the Dead a sequel?
In 2004, Zack Snyder made a Zombie film named Dawn of the Dead.
Given Zack’s upcoming Army of the Dead is also a zombie movie, and the titles are similar, fans have been wondering whether Dawn of the Dead and Army of the Dead are linked.
Dawn of the Dead features a group of survivors who head to a shopping centre in Wisconsin to shelter from a group of zombies who are trying to kill them.

However, Dawn of the Dead is not a prequel to Army of the Dead.
In fact, Dawn of the Dead is a remake of the 1978 film of the same name from director George A Romero.
Zack has indeed set his sights on a franchise, but it will begin with Army of the Dead, rather than continuing with it.
According to Indiewire, he said: “We had an amazing experience with [Netflix].
“I’m trying to write them another movie, and I have two animated series I’m doing with them, and I also have a German-language prequel to ‘Army’ that we did.
“So, we’re really like trying to stay on that franchise, the ‘Army’ franchise.”
“I’m just having a great time shooting these movies right now.
“So, I don’t know. Warner Bros. hasn’t really expressed any interest in making more movies with me, and that’s 100 percent fine. I understand.”
Zack’s mention of Warner Bros is due to the uproar from fans about the DCEU movie Justice League, which came out in 2017.
The final version of the film was cut by director Joss Whedon, due to Zack having to take a leave of absence.
However, the final cut did not impress fans, and for a long time, they were calling for the ‘Snyder Cut’ to finally be released.
Eventually, in 2021, the movie was released on HBO Max and Sky Cinema, called Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
For the film, some of the actors had to return for reshoots, albeit remotely due to the coronavirus pandemic.
While Warner Bros may not be happy with the chaos the Snyder Cut caused them, Netflix seems keen to keep Zack on board.
What is Army of the Dead about?
The official synopsis reads: “From filmmaker Zack Snyder, Army of the Dead takes place following a zombie outbreak that has left Las Vegas in ruins and walled off from the rest of the world.”
The film features Guardian of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista as Scott Ward, “a displaced Vegas local, former zombie war hero” who works at a burger restaurant.
Scott faces “the ultimate proposition” from casino boss Bly Tanaka (Hiroyuki Sanada), after being asked to “break into the zombie-infested quarantine zone”.
The aim? To recover a $200 million jackpot which is said to be lying in a vault beneath the Las Vegas strip.
Scott has to do this all before the government nukes the city in just 32 hours.
The movie also stars Ella Purnell as Scott’s estranged daughter Kate, with whom he hopes to reconcile.
To take on this monumental quest and go up against the deadly zombies Scott puts together a “ragtag team of experts”.
This includes “Maria Cruz (Ana de la Reguera), an ace mechanic and Ward’s old friend; Vanderohe (Omari Hardwick), a zombie killing machine; Marianne Peters (Tig Notaro), a cynical helicopter pilot; Mikey Guzman (Raúl Castillo), a go-for-broke influencer and Chambers (Samantha Win), his ride-or-die; Martin (Garret Dillahunt), the casino’s head of security; a badass warrior known as the Coyote (Nora Arnezeder) who recruits Burt Cummings (Theo Rossi), a slimy security guard; and a brilliant German safe cracker named Dieter (Matthias Schweighöfer).”
Of course, nothing can be as straightforward with the team facing “a ticking clock, a notoriously impenetrable vault, and a smarter, faster horde of Alpha zombies closing in.”
Army of the Dead is released on Netflix on May 21
