Jos Verstappen explains what Lewis Hamilton's father did after controversial F1 decider

Jos Verstappen has opened up on a classy exchange with Lewis Hamilton’s father shortly after the race in Abu Dhabi last week. Max Verstappen won the F1 Drivers’ Championship for the first time in controversial circumstances. Yet despite the agonising nature of his son’s loss, Anthony Hamilton maintained his dignity.

Last weekend was an eventful one in F1, with Hamilton seeing his dominance of the sport ended by Verstappen in crushing circumstances.

The Brit led throughout the majority of the race but, after an issue with the safety car, ended up missing out on glory.

Mercedes launched two appeals to get the result of the race overturned yet, in the end, Verstappen was crowned as the sport’s newest champion.

While his team were furious, Hamilton maintained his integrity by congratulating the Red Bull star on his triumph – while vowing to do everything to make history next term.

And his father, according to Verstappen’s own dad Jos, has explained what Anthony did after the frantic occasion.

“When I was sitting with Max before he went up to the podium, [Lewis’ father] Anthony was there,” he said.

“He congratulated us, so that was really nice.

“Also, during the season, I had some conversations with him over WhatsApp. He’s really nice.

“They’ve won seven titles already so, for them, it is a bit different to when we won the first one, but he’s always respectful.”

While Hamilton’s father was ready to accept the result, the Brit’s brother Nicolas raged on social media in the immediate aftermath.

“The FIA broke their own rules, which is a disgrace to our whole sport. Nevertheless, regardless of being mistreated today, the Hamilton’s were humble in defeat.

“My farther, the guy who raised us, congratulating Max & his father Jos.

“People can say what they like, but my Father’s gesture proves all of the doubters & haters wrong & shows who we are as ‘The Hamilton’s’.

“Proving people wrong is in our DNA, which Lewis does on a daily basis. With utter professionalism & decency in defeat, even though we all know, that he was let down by the sport that he has given so much to.

“Congratulations to Max for such a fantastic season from him.”

Verstappen said earlier this week that he and his whole team ‘went crazy’ when they were confirmed as the season’s winners.

“I was- and the whole team – were going crazy,” he said.

“But of course you also have the other side, where they are very disappointed and upset.

“I think what was nice was Lewis immediately came to me [to say] ‘Well done, congrats’, you know.

“And I said, ‘Thank you very much for an amazing season’ because, at the end of the day I think it was.

“Whoever won or came second, we did push each other every single race to the limit with ourselves, but also the car and the whole team.”

On his rivalry with Hamilton, he then added: “It was definitely a great rivalry.

“But yeah, everyone is very happy that the season is over, to have a bit of a break, because it has been very tense and very tough on everyone.”

Verstappen is guaranteed to return for next season.

Yet while Hamilton has vowed to be back, speculation has arisen suggesting he could retire from the sport.
