'Lots of ammunition!' Joe Biden fails to silence critics amid rising US voter discontent

Joe Biden has given his critics “plenty of ammunition” with a rare solo White House press conference designed to defend the US President’s first year in office, according to American political expert Karl Rove. Mr Biden first year in office came to a close Wednesday as the President faces growing discontent over rising inflations and the continued effects of the Covid pandemic.

Mr Rove told Fox News: “Well, my overall take is that there are lots of ammunition in there for the President’s critics and he gave it to them.

“I mean, I was taken aback with some of it.”

The political commentator then produced a whiteboard listing what he thought were the lowlights of the President’s speech.

“Ukraine, the ‘minor incursion’ that we just talked about, a terrible mistake that the Russians are going to take advantage of.

“No apologies for Afghanistan, he thought he did a perfect.

“Covid I’m satisfied with what we’ve done and I think we’ve done quote ‘remarkably well.'”

He added: “Well, here’s a guy who has spent a year ignoring some of the principal concerns of the American people, including inflation by saying it’s transitory and dismissive of its effects.

“And by focusing on things that are being pushed by the base of his party, without support from the middle, the independents, and in the Congress, support from Republicans, and that’s not what the American people want.

Mr Biden also sparked concern from US allies after telling reporters that Russia would pay dearly for a full-scale invasion but suggesting there could be a lower cost for a “minor incursion.”

“My guess is he will move in,” Mr Biden said of Putin at a news conference. “He has to do something.”

“Russia will be held accountable if it invades – and it depends on what it does.

“It’s one thing if it’s a minor incursion and we end up having to fight about what to do and what to not do, et cetera,” Mr Biden said.
