Liverpool and Manchester City are without a doubt the two strongest teams in the English Premier League over the past 5-10 years. Managers Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp have created teams that set the standard in the league, and while Manchester City has experienced more success domestically, winning 5 out of the last 6 titles (Liverpool winning the other 1), Liverpool and Klopp have been excelling in the cup competitions in both England and abroad.
Overall, many football fans dread seeing one of these two teams coming up as opponents on the football calendar. Both teams are about to become even more scary with the signings of two of Europe’s hottest striking commodities.
Manchester City Seal Bargain Erling Haaland Deal
Erling Haaland has never stopped scoring goals since he burst onto the scene in 2018 as an 18-year-old at RB Salzburg. He moved from Austria to Dortmund in 2019 and was an instant fan favourite., scoring a hattrick on his debut. Haaland went on to score an astonishing 61 goals in 66 German top flight games, making him the best striker in that league, alongside Lewandowski. It must be remembered however that Haaland is currently 22 years old, meaning that his goal scoring exploits thus far have all come in his entry years into the game, with experts predicting his numbers to go up even more once he hits his prime.
Manchester City only paid around $63 million for Erling Haaland, due to him being in the final year of his Dortmund contract. City negotiated with the German Club to pay a few which was lower than his contractual release clause, meaning that the deal overall was an absolute steal. Haaland will be hoping to slot right into Guardiola’s free-flowing style of football.
Darwin Nunez to Replace Sadio Mane’
Liverpool were quick to act in the 2022 summer transfer market by splashing $111 million on Darwin Nunez, who was undoubtedly one of the best strikers in Europe last season. He lit up the Champions League last season with Benfica and was said to have impressed Jurgen Klopp during their semi-final clash against Liverpool. This was a signing that simply needed to happen for the scouse club as one of their leading scorers and club legends, Sadio Mane’, has reportedly agreed a deal to play for Bayern Munich next season in Germany.
Nunez was extremely impressive last season scoring 34 goals to Haaland’s 29, making him, on the surface a better striker on form. However, Haaland has been banging in goals for around three years now while last season was Nunez’ first truly world-class season. Nunez is also only 22 years old however, ad the future looks bright for him, playing alongside players like Mo Salah in Jurgen Klopp’s rock and roll style of football.
These two signings are as exciting as playing a casino online game. They will only serve to further intensify the rivalry between Manchester City and Liverpool and might extend their joint period of dominance in England.
