Verstappen raced ahead of team-mate Perez to win in Japan last Sunday and moved on to 366 points for the season. The latter has now pipped Leclerc to second place, with 253 points to the Ferrari man’s 532.
“The first one is a little more emotional, the second one is more beautiful. We’re leading the constructors so we want to focus on that, to secure that,” Verstappen said afterwards.
“It’s been a special year, and you need to remind yourself as these kind of years you don’t have very often. It’s a pretty crazy feeling, of course, because I didn’t expect it when I crossed the line.
“Of course, you could see it slowly happening, but it’s incredible at the end of the day that we did win it here. I didn’t know how many points I was going to get.”
