In 1996, he signed a deal with Nike to do a TV campaign where he was dubbed the “World’s fastest man”.

The sports brand will usually pay large sums to work with athletes and the deal is likely to have added to his fortune.

The following year, Michael went up against Donovan Bailey, who was the 100 metre world record holder at the time.

Michael did not win but received an appearance fee of $500,000, or around £360,000.
