'NATO strongest alliance in world' Von der Leyen caves as she hints EU Army plans shelved

Plans for a European Union army were thrown out by EU Commissioner Ursula von der Leyen during a speech on the Ukraine crisis. Despite calls to ramp up military resources for an EU army, Ms von der Leyen noted that there needs to be close coordination with NATO to defend from any Russian attack in the future.

Following an EU summit in Versailles, she said: “I want to be very clear that we need to closely coordinate with NATO.

“NATO is the strongest military alliance in the world.

“Thus I welcome that the leaders have tasked us to prepare an analysis of the defence investment gaps and to make sure that we have a clear plan on how to deal with those gaps in Europe by mid-May when the Commission is presenting the results of this undertaking.”
