Rafael Nadal digs deep to beat Jannik Sinner and progress to Italian Open last-16

Rafael Nadal needed two hours and 10 minutes to beat training partner Jannik Sinner in his opening match of the Italian Open. The world No 3 has struggled to find his best form on clay this season and he was tested from the off in Rome.

Jannik spent two weeks practising with Nadal in Adelade earlier this year so the pair knew each others game very well.

But it was the experience of Nadal which came through in the end and he will meet Denis Shapovalov in the next round.
