‘Refreshing’: Sophie Wessex & Edward ‘lost in loving’ conversations while in Scotland

Sophie, Countess of Wessex and Prince Edward carried out engagements in Scotland, visiting Forfar Golf Club as well as Utopia Costumes and a social supermarket, S-Mart. The couple later visited Edinburgh’s St James Quarter for a tour of its new development.

Sophie and Edward are both senior working members of the Royal Family which means they will often visit organisations and charities.

According to body language expert Judi James the couple’s “long bouts” of eye contact suggests they often appear to be “lost in loving and fun” conversations with one another.

She told Express.co.uk: “In these times of rifts and rumblings of trouble in the royal family it is refreshing and uplifting to watch members of the Firm who really do look as though they adore being in each other’s company.

“This week we saw the body language signals of shared fondness and clearly mutual respect between the Queen and William up in Scotland and here we can watch similar from long-term marrieds Edward and Sophie.

Analysing the snap, Judi explained: “The signals of mutual interest and active listening are as strong between this couple as when they communicate externally.

“Walking together, Edward’s head is turned exclusively towards his wife, who he seems to be trying to amuse with his rather cheeky-looking smile and eye contact.”

Another picture showed the couple listening to shop workers talk about how they have handled the pandemic.

The expert said: “Here both Edward and Sophie have switched to empathetic-looking listening mode.

“Her hands are both clasped tight in front of her torso and his behind his back to suggest compliant listening, which can suggest a caring approach in the current pandemic.”

Chatting to café workers, Judi explained that Edward raises his hands to signal “active communication”.

She added: “They are raised and held apart in a gesture that suggests he is asking questions and offering sympathy to the café staff he is talking to.

“As her husband speaks, Sophie ‘stands down’ to give him the floor, with her arms by her sides and that empathetic head tilt.”

The couple also have two children together, Lady Louise Windsor, 17, and James Viscount Severn, 13.

Speaking previously to Express.co.uk, Judi explained that Sophie’s body language suggests a “protective” approach to parenting.

The expert said: “Sophie’s body language with her children has always suggested a very proud and subtly protective approach from a mother keen to grow their confidence by setting her own strong example.

“Sophie always looks energetic and jolly in a family group, often walking slightly ahead with an air of upbeat determination that should make her a role model for both her husband and her children.”
