Ryan Mason explains what Carabao Cup final told him about Tottenham squad despite defeat

Ryan Mason has praised the character of his Tottenham players after a difficult week both on and off the field. It’s been a rollercoaster ride for all of the players amid a host of difficult issues away from the football field.

On Monday, Spurs confirmed they had parted company with manager Jose Mourinho.

But that wasn’t the biggest news of the day, with Tottenham one of 12 founding members of the European Super League.

The potential breakaway soon collapsed, while Mason was brought in to replace Mourinho on an interim basis.

His tenure got off to an impressive start on Wednesday, as Spurs beat Southampton 2-1 in the Premier League.

“We saw that Wednesday, the way they’ve reacted.

“Their professionalism is top so, there’s no doubt that this group of players are top, top guys.

“So, we are disappointed. It hurts, it hurts me, it hurts the players, I’m sure it hurts our fans and everyone associated with the football club.

“It’s tough to take losing the cup final but we have things to play for.

“We have a really important fixture next week, we have to get over this as soon as possible and start preparing for that.”

Spurs looked void of ideas at Wembley and City proved to be a class above despite the narrow scoreline.

Tottenham still have a slim chance of making the top-four as they look to finish the season as strongly as possible.
