The best destination for expats in Europe named – move for 'better' lifestyle

4 mins read

New research has uncovered the health capital of Europe and the winner is a fantastic destination for future expats. A healthier lifestyle is often a key reason why British expats make the choice to move abroad.

PUMA gave 52 major European cities a health score based on several important ‘health’ factors.

The study looked at the number of healthy restaurants, water quality, air pollution, total hours of sunlight and number of gyms.

The surprising joint winners of the European capital of health were Lisbon in Portugal and Andorra la Vella.

Lisbon had 307 healthy restaurants and 2806 hours of sunlight making it a fantastic destination for health.

Portugal has become an increasingly popular destination with British expats and an estimated 46,000 Britons live there.

As well as being a fantastic destination for health, Lisbon is one of the cheapest cities in Western Europe.

This means expats can normally enjoy a higher quality of life than they could afford in the UK.

Lisbon is also one of the hilliest European cities so expats are likely to easily reach a 10,000 steps a day target.

DON’T MISS

The tiny capital of Andorra, Andorra la Vella, came in joint first place for European capital of health.

With just 23,000 residents, Andorra la Vella has an incredible 230 gyms which means expats will find it easy to exercise.

Water quality was also very high in Andorra which isn’t surprising due to its location in the Pyrenees mountain range.

Cradled in a green valley, Andorra la Vella is an extremely beautiful spot which expats are likely to enjoy exploring.

It was bad news for Londoners as London was ranked the least healthy city in the UK in the PUMA study.

Edinburgh ranked highest making the Scottish capital the health capital of the UK with 103 healthy restaurants.

In third place in Europe, was the Swiss capital city of Bern. The healthy city can trace its architecture back to medieval times.

Switzerland was recently voted the best destination for expats in the world in the HSBC Expat Explorer survey.

Due to its mountainous terrain, expats in Switzerland can expect very high water and air quality.

The cities that scored the lowest in the health factors were Ankara in Turkey, Moscow in Russia and Baku in Azerbaijan.

Ankara only had 34 healthy restaurants while Moscow had barely any gyms for its residents to exercise.
