Tottenham have three players Porto may accept in Luis Diaz swap deal

Tottenham are reportedly stepping up their interest in Porto winger Luis Diaz as they look to finally kick off their transfer business in the mid-season market. The 24-year-old has established himself as one of Europe’s finest emerging talents in recent years and has been linked with a number of clubs this month as a result of his stunning form in Portugal.

Diaz has scored 16 goals in all competitions since the beginning of the campaign after impressing at international level with Colombia at last summer’s Copa America.

Tottenham are said to be keen on a move for his services ahead of next week’s transfer deadline, with Antonio Conte desperate to add some much-needed quality to his ranks ahead of the Premier League run-in.

However, Porto are prepared to hold out until the north Londoners are willing to meet Diaz’s release clause of £66million, according to The Sun.

It remains to be seen whether Spurs will be able to drive down his asking price by tabling a player-plus-cash offer in order to aid their hopes of landing Wolves forward Adama Traore in addition to Diaz over the coming days.

With that in mind, Express Sport takes a look at three players that could be used as bargaining chips if Tottenham decide to go down the part-exchange route with the aim of striking a cut-price deal.

Dele Alli

Once hailed as the future of English football, Alli has inexplicably fallen off the radar over the last few years and does not seem to have much of a future at Tottenham as things stand.

He has only been used as a bit-part player this season and has been strongly linked with Newcastle United on a temporary basis over the last few days.

However, a permanent exit in the form of a move to Porto could give him the chance to make a fresh start abroad while helping Spurs to land a top-class player in Diaz in the process.

Alli has shown flashes of brilliance on occasion and could eventually be a shrewd acquisition for the Portuguese heavyweights, but it remains to be seen whether they would be up for the challenge of bringing him back to his best.

Bryan Gil

Tottenham could sweeten any offer for Diaz by providing Porto with a like-for-like replacement if Gil is sent the other way on loan until the end of the season.

The 20-year-old arrived at Spurs with plenty of promise but has struggled to maintain a regular spot in the side over the course of his debut campaign.

He still has bags of potential, though, with a temporary move to Porto able to provide a win-win solution for all parties.

Gil’s individual development would benefit from a consistent run of first-team football and he would not be missed by Spurs if Diaz is snapped up as part of the same deal.

Giovani Lo Celso

Lo Celso could represent another part-exchange option for Spurs after failing to hit the heights expected of him during his time in England.

He has recently been linked with Sevilla, who are said to be facing stiff competition from Real Betis in the race for his signature.

However, a move to Porto could still be an attractive proposition for Lo Celso as he would stand a good chance of emerging as one of the club’s star players in good time.

Spurs would also be set to reap the rewards of replacing the 25-year-old with Diaz, although Porto would likely demand at least a small fee on top of the deal to make it happen.
