Russia has now amassed roughly 100,000 troops on its border with Ukraine, sparking fears Vladimir Putin is plotting to invade. War correspondent Nolan Peterson, who is based in Ukraine, tweeted on Thursday that “US citizens in Ukraine should be aware that the US government will not be able to evacuate US citizens in the event of Russian military action anywhere in Ukraine”.

He added: “Military action may commence at any time and without warning.”

While Moscow has denied that Russia plans to invade its neighbour, Boris Johnson is attending talks in Belgium and Poland to try and handle the crisis diplomatically.

He described the next few days as probably “the most dangerous moment” and has called for Putin to pull his troops from the border.

Russia has set out a list of demands to the US and the rest of NATO, principally that NATO cease their expansion eastward and prevent Ukraine from joining.

The demands have so far been rejected by the US and NATO.

NATO has threatened to impose strict sanctions on Russia if it moves to invade, including potentially cutting Russia out of the global financial system.

This could have a catastrophic effect on Russian businesses and ordinary citizens.
