West Ham hopeful of completing £26m Kurt Zouma transfer as Chelsea star waits on medical

Kurt Zouma is still on course to complete his £26million move to West Ham with the player currently in France awaiting the green light to undergo a medical. The two clubs are understood to have reached an agreement over a fee earlier this week before reports emerged last night claiming the deal was on the brink of collapse.

The Chelsea defender has been clear for a number of weeks that he would prefer to stay in the Premier League and ideally London, if he was to leave Stamford Bridge.

Tottenham and Roma were among a host of other clubs to have shown interest this summer but neither presented a formal offer to Chelsea.

West Ham then entered the picture after they pulled the plug on their deal to sign Nikola Milenkovic, who has now signed a new contract with Fiorentina.

The move for the Serbian international was on the verge of completion before the Hammers decided to walk away from the table to pursue other targets.

Telefoot’s Julien Maynard, who has been right at the centre of this deal, reports that Zouma was already across The Channel and would therefore have to quarantine upon return to the UK.

There was also another clear indication last night that West Ham’s deal to sign Zouma was not entirely off, as some suggested.

That’s because per reports, Chelsea are now closing in on the signing of Jules Kounde from Sevilla after presenting an offer of £43m for the centre-back.

The European champions were only ever likely to pursue the 22-year-old if they managed to offload Zouma, despite the exciting emergence of Trevoh Chalobah in recent weeks.

Chelsea are expected to wait until the finalisation of Zouma’s departure before completing a deal for Kounde, though.

The Hammers are now confident they will still sign the Frenchman to kickstart a difficult transfer window into life.

David Moyes and the board have struggled to get new signings over the line and West Ham need to bolster the options within their squad to combat the burden of Europa League football this season.

Marseille’s Duje Caleta-Car is one of the other names on their shortlist if they fail to complete the capture of Zouma.
