WhatsApp's latest upgrade has a big hidden cost for Samsung Galaxy S20 and S21 owners

WhatsApp is working on a major change that could be both good and bad for Samsung Galaxy S20 and S21 owners. According to the ever-reliable team at WABetainfo – who trawl through upcoming releases and new features – the popular chat app is about to let its billions of users send top-notch quality videos across its platform.

Right now, when you want to message a friend with a hilarious video of your cat, WhatsApp crunches the file to make it easier and less memory-hungry to send across the web. However, in the future, you may be able to send movies from your phone in the best possible quality.

A screenshot posted by WAbetainfo shows the new setting with options including Auto, Data Saver and Best Quality.

WhatsApp will automatically recommend its users select “Auto” which offers the optimal image without a huge file size but tap the “Best Quality” option and your contacts will be treated to the full pin-sharp movie you’ve snapped on your phone.

Clearly, that’s great if you want your family to see a beautiful sunset you’ve just shot but it could make a serious dent in your data allowance.

Both the S20 and S21 are capable of shooting footage in glorious 8K quality which offers a resolution that’s four times better than standard 4K and eight times better than standard HD.

It’s pretty incredible stuff but with all that detail packed into the image, 8K uses up a massive amount of memory.

In fact, according to SamMobile, sending a two minute 8K clip could chew through around 1.2GB of data.

Start doing that too often and you find your mobile network sends the dreaded text warning that your monthly data is running low and you need to buy more.

Unless you have an unlimited SIM slotted inside your phone, adding more internet access is never cheap so Samsung users would be wise to check their WhatsApp settings when this upgrade is finally released.

There’s no word when this new movie sending feature will launch with WABetainfo currently saying that it’s in the test phase right now.
