Ajax open to selling two stars linked with Man City, Chelsea and Leeds – 'It's no secret'

Ajax director of football Marc Overmars has admitted the club is open to selling two of their brightest stars this summer. The Dutch club is firmly established as one of the best talent factories in Europe and looks set to be busy in the transfer market once again.

Ajax sold Hakim Ziyech to Chelsea, Donny van de Beek to Manchester United and Sergino Dest to Barcelona last year for a combined profit of over £85million.

The year before, they raked in substantial fees for Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt, who joined Barcelona and Juventus, respectively.

Although they failed to get past the group stages of the Champions League, Ajax have enjoyed another fruitful season domestically, having secured a league and cup double.

More promising players have developed under the management of Erik ten Hag and it seems likely some will be leaving this summer.

Wonderkid Ryan Gravenberch has made headlines in the past week after his father urged him to stay in Amsterdam amid interest from the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea.

Ajax understandably want to keep hold of the 18-year-old central midfielder, who could star for the Netherlands at the European Championships, but others are more expendable.

In the wake of their Eredivisie title win on Sunday, former Arsenal forward Overmars has revealed that two players in particular have been earmarked for moves.

“A departure for Nicolas Tagliafico and David Neres would not be illogical“, Overmars told Dutch magazine Voetbal International.

“Neres has been with Ajax since the beginning of 2017, is 24 years old, and wants to take a step.

“The same applies to Tagliafico, who has been playing here for three and a half years now and will turn 29 next summer. It is no secret that they are open to a transfer.

“Just as it is well known that outbound transfers are a significant part of our revenue.”

Left-back Tagliafico has been linked with Chelsea, Manchester City and Leeds in the past few weeks, with the Sun reporting that he could have moved to the Premier League last year, if not for COVID-related difficulties.

The Argentina international, who has also been linked with Atletico Madrid, is under contract with Ajax until 2023, but the report states he would be available for around £17.5m this summer.

The experienced 28-year-old has made 39 appearances across all competitions for Ajax this season, contributing one goal and three assists.

Neres, meanwhile, has registered eight goals and four assists across 36 matches this season playing on either wing.

The Brazilian wide man, who joined Ajax from Sao Paulo in 2016, is under contract with Ajax until the summer of 2023.
