And the fans were treated to a musical “love letter” of Vaughan Williams, MacMillan and Sibelius on Friday, 22 months after the last pre-Covid capacity performance.

Just 24 hours later came “The Golden Age of Broadway”, with songs from classics such as South Pacific and High Society.

Over 43 days, 2,000 musicians will give 52 concerts, with the iconic Last Night on September 11.

Ahead of this first live performance, Finnish Ms Stasevska, who opted for a striking surcoat rather than the traditonal black suit, said: “It’s thrilling. Just to hear the people clapping and the whole ritual at the start: The silence and the people waiting for the first note.”
