Discretionary Housing Payments promoted as housing debts mount – eligibility explained

Recently, Stephen Timms, the chairman of the Work and Pensions committee, questioned rent arrear rates in Parliament.

He said: “To ask the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, what estimate his Department has made of the number of tenants that have built up rent arrears since COVID-19 lockdown measures were introduced; and if he will make a statement.”

Today, Eddie Hughes, the Under-Secretary for Housing, Communities and Local Government, responded.

Eddie stood by the Government’s efforts on the issue, as he detailed: “Government support has ensured that the vast majority of tenants have maintained their rent payments.
