'Expected to win' Chris Hoy on Jason and Laura Kenny as pressure mounts on cycling pair

3 mins read

Six time Olympic champion Sir Chris Hoy told the BBC how he reckons cycling hero’s Laura and Jason Kenny could bring home a host of gold medals while Team GB cycling could bag a “clutch of silvers and bronzes”. His optimistic comments come as Jason Kenny has come out of retirement to get back in the saddle to challenge the cycling world yet again. But Hoy warned the pair are not the “dominant force” they were in the past when compared to a very strong Denmark cycling team.

Sir Chris Hoy said: “I think there is potential for some gold medals.

“Whether they can dominate in the way they have in the past three Games that remains to be seen.

“But I guess stars like Laura Kenny – she has a great chance to win three gold medals starting today in the Team Pursuit.”

The Olympic cycling legend then went on to address Laura’s teammate and husband Jason Kenny and his medal chances in Tokyo.

“Jason Kenny, [he is a] six time gold medalist already.

“He pretty much retired after Rio, he has come back!”

But Sir Chris went on to warn how the pair “are not the dominant force they have been in the past.”

But he did speculate that ”there will be potentially four gold medals and a clutch of silvers and bronzes” for Team GB’s cyclists.

The Track Cycling is currently under way in Tokyo where Team GB are vying for gold.

Canada were leading the way in the men’s team pursuit qualifying with a time of 3:50.455.

But Denmark have just blown that out the water with 3:45.014.

Denmark’s time is a new Olympic record.
