HMRC urges Britons receiving tax credits to look out for important letter – take action

2 mins read

HMRC, or HM Revenue and Customs as it is formally known, helps millions of people with their taxes, but also oversees certain payments. One such sum is tax credits, available to eligible Britons right across the country. However, for those who are in receipt of tax credits, there is an important update to bear in mind.

A change in circumstances, HMRC has recognised, may be more common for tax credit recipients this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Some individuals may have earned less money than in previous years, and could thus see their claim affected.

As such, checking income details within this pack will be of particular importance for many.

Changes in circumstances can, of course, vary, but there are particular issues which may impact someone’s tax credit payments.

By accessing the Government’s official website, tax credit recipients can check the progress of a renewal.

HMRC will use this channel to keep people updated on when they can expect to hear back about their claim.

However, those expecting tax credit renewals have been advised to stay alert, as cybercriminals look to take advantage.

Some mimic Government messages through text or email in order to look authentic, while others may try to defraud Britons over the phone.

As such, if anyone is asked for bank or personal details, or told to transfer money, they are advised this is a scam.
