DDiabetes type 2 symptoms: Pain in the back of the calves may be due to high blood sugar

2 mins read

Type 2 diabetes is when there is high blood sugars, as the insulin needed to transform glucose (i.e. sugar) into energy doesn’t work as well anymore. Why does this happen? Long-term damaging effects are the result of irritated and damaged blood vessels. The high sugar content in the blood irritates the blood vessels and increases a person’s risk of heart disease by up to five times.

This type of symptom is indicative of nerve damage – a health complication of untreated type 2 diabetes.

Other health complications can include kidney disease, damaged vision, sexual dysfunction and miscarriage.

Before high blood sugars are left to linger to cause such damage to the body, be aware of the early indications of type 2 diabetes.

The earliest warning signs of type 2 diabetes include:

  • Increased thirst
  • Increased hunger
  • Increased urination
  • Fatigue
  • Slow healing of cuts and wounds
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Blurred vision
  • Itchiness around the genital area

One reason behind type 2 diabetes is being overweight and not exercising enough.

People who have a BMI (body mass index) of 30 or more are at particular risk.

Fat stored around the stomach can increase the risk too, as this releases chemicals that “upset the body’s cardiovascular and metabolic systems”.

This can be assessed by measuring your waist, with a measurement of 80cm or more placing women in the higher risk category for diabetes.

For men, they’re more at risk of diabetes if their waist measurement is 89cm or higher.

“Exercising regularly and reducing your body weight by about five percent could reduce your risk of getting diabetes by more than 50 percent,” said the NHS.
