Russian billionaire Roman Abramovic first bought Chelsea FC back in 2003 in an attempt to create a footballing hub in London, England’s capital city. 19 years later Abramovic has been forced to sell the club by the British government, due to his ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin, following the invasion of Ukraine in early 2022. A consortium led by American billionaire Todd Boehly officially completed the takeover of the football club in mid-2022, for a sum of £4.25 billion.

Who is Todd Boehly?

Fans of Chelsea Football Club have been entirely grateful to Roman Abramovic for the investment and commitment that he put into making the team one of the most powerful and successful in Europe over the past 20 years. However, many of them understand the need to change ownership and are welcoming Todd Boehly as the new owner amidst the uncertain socio-economic circumstances happening in that region of the world.

Prior to completing the purchase of Chelsea FC Bohely was best known for being a co-owner of one of the most successful baseball franchises in the MLB – the Los Angeles Dodgers. This bodes well for Chelsea fans as having an owner who has experience in running a franchise that is focused on winning is exactly what they want to hear.

Boehly acquired his riches by founding Eldridge Industries as well as being one of the chairpersons of the Hollywood Foreign Press. Boehly has been described as a data driven person with a drive to always be the best, and fans of Chelsea FC will hope that he can instil his own philosophies of success at the club.

How Boehly Won the Bid

Besides the Todd Boehly backed consortium, there were many other bidders that wanted to take the reins in London and the list was as interesting to read as a Big Dollar Casino review. However, it only took 85 days since Roman Abramovic put Chelsea up for sale for Boehly to be announced as the preferred bidder, and as the man who would take a controlling stake in the club. Many of the other bidders have been said to have been distracted by the PR of the entire sales process, focusing on other aspects that were not as important as putting together a strong bid with a cohesive plan for success.

Boehly was described as calm and focused throughout the process of bidding and his partner at Clearlake Capital, Eghbali, are said to have a strong relationship that goes beyond business. They are said to be good friends who have a strong plan for sustained success in the English Premier League. Boehly has been interested in purchasing a club in the Premier League for quite some time, and is said to have carried out due diligence on the purchase of Chelsea back in 2019, when he previously made a formal bid to purchase the football club. Todd Boehly has a net worth of $4.5 billion, placing him well within the top 5 richest owners in the league.
